Far Peak Climbing on Tour! Yesterday our mobile wall went to Glenfall Community Primary School for their Glenfest50 celebration! Lots of children were able to try climbing for the first time in the sunshine, what a great day!

❓HAVE YOU SIGNED A WAIVER?❓ ❓IS YOUR WAIVER UP TO DATE?❓ As with the majority of activity centres, all of our activities require any participants to have a valid waiver form with us, so if you're planning to visit us soon you may find it easier to do it in advance of your visit so that we can speed up your check in process. ⚠️AUTO BELAY SIGNAGE⚠️ We are constantly looking at more things we can do to help our climbers stay safe on the auto belays. There has been a noted increase in auto belay related accidents at climbing centres in the last few years as a result of even some of the most experienced users failing to clip in before a climb. We realise that our regular climbers may have stopped noticing our bright yellow signage on the tower, so we have now purchased signage in various colours to rotate the signage on the tower and hopefully keep our climbers noticing the safety information. #climb #climbingcentre #climbersofinstagram #climbing #climbinglife

⛄️12 Days of Christmas Elf & Safety!⛄️ Our Christmas Elf has been demonstrating some of the bad behaviours we've seen in the centre over the past year and highlighting the risks of these behaviours. This is the last post (sorry, we missed 2 days which is why we are stopping at 10!) in our series which we hope has provided some interesting information and highlighted some key safety points to help you in your climbing this year Day 10 - belaying position Over the past year we've challenged some risky belaying positions with belayers being very far away from the bottom of the climbing wall. Even on a top rope, if a climber was to fall from a route and the belayer was too far from the wall, there is a risk of the belayer being pulled into the wall. With the amount of rope in the system, this can increase the distance the climber could potentially fall and therefore increasing the risk of a climber hitting the floor before their belayer could catch them. When choosing where to belay from, a belayer should consider: • What is the weight difference between you and your climber? • What is the grade of the route your climber is climbing? Does this increase the chance of them potentially slipping from the route? • Who else is around? What space do they need? • Is the floor around you clear of tripping hazards? • Can you move around freely if needed to keep the rope off the climber? #climb #climbingcentre #climbersofinstagram #climbing #climbinglife #climbinguk

Day 9 - jumping off the bouldering wall While the mats under bouldering walls might feel squishy, they are crash mats - not safety mats. This means they reduce the risk of injury in the event of a fall, but don't remove it completely. Day 8 - equipment not used properly There are a couple of issues with the way Elf's belay device is set up, can you spot them? Over the last year we have had to intervene in a few situations where we've noticed carabiners not done up properly, or carabiners being crossloaded when lowering climbers. Carabiners are designed to be stronger when loaded lengthways than they are when loaded across. Loading across will result in reduced strength. Not having carabiners done up properly also increases the risk of the gate opening during use. Buddy checks before climbing will reduce the risk of carabiners being left unsecured, and keeping an eye on your equipment during use will ensure carabiners haven't rotated during use. #climb #climbingcentre #climbersofinstagram #climbing #climbinglife #climbinguk

Day 7 - poor lead belaying There are a couple of issues with Elf's lead belaying here, can you spot them? Standing too far back from the wall and allowing too much slack in the rope while lead belaying both significantly increase the risk of a climber 'decking' (hitting the floor before the belayer has chance to catch the climber). We have intervened in both situations over the last year. Day 6 - wearing a harness incorrectly While we haven't seen a harness on backwards over the last year, we have seen harnesses worn incorrectly with waistbands and leg loops upside down, harnesses twisted, belay loops twisted, waistbands too low on the hips instead of the waist and leg loops on the wrong legs! If you got yourself a new harness for Christmas, make sure you make yourself familiar with how it should be worn according to manufacturer guidelines and if you're ever unsure, our team are always happy to help. #climb #climbingcentre #climbersofinstagram #climbing #climbinglife #climbinguk

We do want to point out that no elves or instructors were harmed in the making of this image! Day 5 - letting go of the brake rope, especially on a GriGri! One of the most common reasons we fail belay checks at Far Peak, and one of the most common interventions we make is due to belayers letting go of the brake rope. This happens more often when belayers are using GriGris and the response we always get is 'but it is a locking device'. GriGris are assisted braking devices, which means the design of the device has an extra feature to add more friction on the rope, but they are not locking devices. Ropes have been proven to slip through GriGris upon a climber falling from a route because the belayer has not had a strong grip on the brake rope. Whenever you buy a new belay device, always make yourself familiar with the manufacturers instructions for use that come with the device. Petzl's instructions for the GriGri include: 'Before using a GriGri, you must know the proper belaying techniques. The GriGri's cam assisted blocking capability does not relieve you of the need to follow basic belaying principles: be attentive to the climber's progress and always hold the brake side of the rope.' #climb #climbingcentre #climbersofinstagram #climbing #climbinglife #climbinguk

Day 4 - back clipping while leading This year we have spotted a couple of lead climbers back clipping the quick draws. This can result in the rope coming unclipped from the quick draw during a fall, removing your protection! Day 3 - weight bags used incorrectly This year we have had to intervene in the way weight bags have been used after seeing belayers sitting on them while belaying and seeing weightbags attached to non weight rated gear loops. Weight bags are available for all belayers to use if there is a significant weight difference between you and your climber, and adjustable slings are available to borrow from reception. Weightbags must be placed behind you and attached to a weight-rated part of your harness (not gear loops!) and the sling adjusted to the appropriate length to allow you to belay on your feet but kept short enough that you don't leave the ground like our poor Elf here! #climb #climbingcentre #climbersofinstagram #climbing #climbinglife #climbinguk

Day 2 - knots tied incorrectly There are 2 problems with Elf's knot here, can you spot them? We regularly see figure of 8s not reathreaded properly and stopper knots not tied properly. It is important that climbers do their buddy checks to check that all knots are tied correctly, harnesses are fitted properly and belay devices are set up properly BEFORE EVERY CLIMB. Those who attend will be given the opportunity to log their progress against simple challenges set by their instructor and earn certificates for each level they complete as a way of preparing them for the Rockstarz club if they want to continue climbing from the age of 7. 🎃HALF TERM OPENING HOURS🎃 Our opening hours are extended over the October Half Term and there are lots of climbing sessions available to book at farpeakclimbing.co.uk including: - Mini Rockers (ages 3-6 climbing taster) - Kids Climbing Taster (ages 7-14 climbing taster) - Private Climbing Sessions (ages 3+ climbing sessions) Our bouldering walls will also be open. The low ropes obstacle course will be open when it is safe to open it, but on wet or windy days it will be closed due to safety reasons. If you're planning on visiting in the evenings even if just for your regular bouldering session, it may be worth booking ahead on the website so we know to expect you. Hari lost both his legs to an IED in Afghanistan in 2010. Determined to change perceptions of what is possible for people with a disability, Hari will attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest in May 2023, with the specialist support and guidance from Krish. Climbing Mount Everest without legs, is a feat that has never even been attempted to date. In accomplishing this challenge, Hari hopes to: · create history and become the world’s first double above-knee amputee to conquer Everest · show / prove that disability does not have to be life limiting · inspire people to conquer their own dreams and lead more fulfilling lives Hear first-hand how they are developing prototype kit and innovating equipment and technology to accommodate Hari’s disability in some of the most extreme environments and conditions on Earth. Around 12-15% of the world’s population have some kind of disability. That’s nearly 1 billion people worldwide. In summiting Everest Hari hopes to inspire other people facing similar circumstances to believe anything is possible with the right mindset. “Having a disability does not have to be life limiting, whatever is thrown at you, you can live life to the full. 👩‍👦KIDS PLAY SESSIONS👩‍👦 Calling Pre-School parents!  WE NEED YOUR HELP! We are excited to announce the launch of our new HARD PLAY sessions, every weekday morning (term time) 9am-12pm. These sessions are FREE this year to all Cafe patrons and will give younger children access to our covered castle climbing area and kids play park.  Parents will have plenty of spaces to meet and chat undercover or in our safe courtyard area, without the fear of losing the little ones while you chat! We have also invested in some great soft building blocks and shapes for the kids too which will be coming soon BUT we would love some donations if possible of old (but robust), good condition pre schooler toys for the kids to play with too.  Things like 'grass mowers', big trucks and push alongs, chalk board easels (nothing that beeps, flashes or sings please). #climb #climbingcentre #climbersofinstagram #climbing #climbinglife #climbinguk

ROCKSTARZ AGES 7-14 Has your child tried climbing on one of our tasters and wants to progress their skills? Maybe they want to join the national scheme NICAS and log their progress, earning certificates for each level they complete. ASCENDERS AGES 14-17 Does your teen like climbing and want to progress their skills? Maybe they want to join NICAS, or use climbing as their sport for Duke of Edinburgh / GCSE PE. NICAS 3/4 GROUPS Once your child has completed NICAS 1&2, they might find it more suitable to climb with others at the same level as the skills on the scheme become more involved. 🔥CLIMBER SPOTLIGHT!🔥 Clive came to us at the end of 2021 with a big goal: To be outdoor Sport Climbing ready for Malta in August 2022! Having never climbed before, Clive had alot to learn... Between the team at Far Peak Climbing Centre and Mike @allclimbuk, Clive learned about the safety and the hazards associated with bottom rope climbing and lead climbing, the equipment he'd be using, he learned how to tie in safely, to bottom rope belay, to lead belay, along with everything else he needed to know! This all prepared him for his trip to Malta last month!
